  • What style of Kung Fu do you teach?
    • Shaolin Iron Tiger.  It was developed by Grandmaster Greenlee blending the Shaolin Tiger style with Burma Bondo techniques which adds elbows, knees and shins. It is a style designed for real-world street self defense.

Tiger Kung Fu dates back to the time of Dr. Hua T'o and constituted some of the original kung fu exercises taught for health.  As a fighting art, it traces its roots to Burma and the ancient methods of bandasilat.   Among the Shaolin, the Tiger style was a necessity for study because it encompassed all aspects of armed and unarmed combat.

For the most part, Shaolin Iron Tiger Kung Fu utilizes a hard, external approach to combat that meets force with force and is very likely to maim or kill an opponent because of the nature of the counterattack.  Its primary hand weapons are the closed fist and the tiger claw while kicking maneuvers are usually low to middle range kicks of great power.

One studies Shaolin Iron Tiger to develop bones, muscles and tendons.   The emphasis is on strength and dynamic tension, culminated in short, hard, snappy moves.

As in all styles of Kung Fu, one becomes the animal.
  • How long does it take to get a Black Sash?
    • As long as it takes, no longer and no sooner.  It solely depends on the student.  We at Cook's Impact have set scheduled times of but will never promote a student until they are mentally and physically prepared.

Unlike grade school and college classes that must pass people through in a given amount of time, a martial art is boundless.  That means that advancement is achieved only after the student can do a certain level of technique.  However, many styles do establish minimum times in grade before allowing students to advance to a higher rank.   While such a program may be useful (giving the student time to be comfortable with the old before tackling the new), be wary of such schools; often, the delay is a ploy to prolong student payments.
  • How do I get the most out of the class?
    • Pay attention, Participate, Practice, and above all, have Patience with yourself!   The exercises in class are taught to help you build core muscles and endure the movements of the techniques.   If you start to fake a few exercises here and there you are losing out.   Every movement and every exercise should be done to the fullest and the best of your ability.   This is the only way to surpass your current limitations.
