  • What is Self Defense?
    • Self-defense is a set of awareness, assertiveness, physical techniques and verbal confrontation skills with safety strategies that enable you to successfully escape, resist and survive violent attacks.

      Self-Defense training can increase your options and help you prepare responses to slow down, de-escalate, or interrupt an attack.   Like any tool, the more you know about it, the more informed you are to make a decision and to use it.  There are no guarantees when it comes to self-protection.   However, self-defense training can increase your options and your preparedness.
  • What day and time are classes held?
    • Our FREE Self Defense classes are held quarterly.

  • Could physical self-defense cause more harm?
    • You must consider what more harm means.   Rape survivors speak about emotional hurts lasting long after physical hurts heal.   Studies show a physical self-defense response does not increase the level of physical injury, and sometimes decreases the likelihood.   Also, going along with the attacker does not guarantee that you will not be brutally injured anyway.   The point of using self-defense is to de-escalate a situation and get away as soon as possible.  

      Knowing some physical techniques increases the range of possible self-defense options, but the decision to choose a physical option must remain with the person in the situation.
  • Are realistic scenarios used?
    • Words like "most realistic", "best", "guaranteed success", are all gimmicks.   No program or instructor can replicate a real assault since there are so many different scenarios, and a real attack would require a no-holds barred fight which would be extremely dangerous to create.  Within responsible boundries, we do provide instruction in real what-if situations.
  • What do your students wear?
    • T-shirt and shorts or sweats. Whatever you feel comfortable in.
  • Do students need special gear for this class?
    • No special gear is needed for our Self Defense class.
  • What equipment do students work with?
    • Students will work with the following equipment:

      Focus mitts

      Rubber knife

      Kicking shield


  • Do students need to get in shape first?
    • No.  You don't have to be an athlete to learn how to defend yourself.   Although the idea of getting in shape sounds like something you might want to do, and will certainly increase your ability to defend yourself, it's not necessary.   

      We recommend our class as a great way to get in shape.

      Each individual is unique and students are encouraged to discuss their own needs with their instructor.
  • What are the advantages of a Self Defense Course?
    • Self-defense training can help you avoid attacks and increase your options and your readiness in case you are attacked.
  • How old must the Student be?
    • Our Adult groups start at age 14.  Our Youth groups start at age 6 with content tailored to their age.
  • Am I too old?
    • NO!  We have students of all ages, abilities and goals.  We've found that a mixture of age groups in a class is beneficial to all.  Each age group can learn something from the other.

      At Cook's Impact, our class atmosphere is friendly and open, which allows people of all ages to work at their own pace and ability.  We will try to push you to your limits, not anyone else's limit.

      Look to your Instructor for guidance for your specific goals.  
  • How do I get the most out of the class?
    • Pay attention, Participate, Practice, and above all, have Patience with yourself!   The exercises in class are taught to help you build core muscles and endure the movements of the techniques.   If you start to fake a few movements here and there you are losing out.   Every movement and every exercise should be done to the fullest and the best of your ability.   This is the only way to surpass your current limitations.
  • Do you offer private lessons?
    • Yes!  Some students enjoy private or semi-private sessions but it is not needed at Cook's Impact.  If an individual want's additional training with one of their favorite instructors they are able to purchase them for an additional fee.
  • How do I get started?
    • We offer discounts for Families, Military, Firefighters, and Law Enforcement officers.

      Getting started is simple—just check out the , find the class(es) you're interested in, and drop by, call or complete the form at the bottom of this page to make an appointment for a FREE class of your choice.

      When you come in, we'll show you around and answer whatever questions you have.   Once you're ready to give it a try, you'll just need to fill out our waiver, and then you can jump right in.

      All you need are workout clothes, though you'll most certainly want a bottle of water, to stay hydrated.

      Once you've experienced your first class, you'll have a great idea of what you can get from Cook's Impact Academy.
