155 LB weight Advanced Amatuer Mixed Martial Arts

      Russell Benes (Cook's Impact/GA)
        versus
      Joshua Parker

      Results:  Draw
Live Fight Coverage from Next MMA Fighter:

Josh is a terror and assaults Russ quickly getting him to the ground to work some ground and pound.   Russ is working franticly from the ground for a triangle or any sort of break in the action.   Russ is able to stand but Josh is tenacious and rushes to meet him in a clinch with knees and punches on the inside.   Josh is expending a lot of energy early in the fight and Russ is seeing that.   Before he's able to capitalize however Josh is able to pick him up and slam him.   Russ works his way out again and they get to standing.   Russ is able to defend from the takedown and land some strikes before the end of the round.

Round 2 Russ is able to land some good strikes early in the round but Josh goes low again and gets the takedown.   Josh is able to keep the fight on the ground for the most part but Russ is finally able to stand.   Josh is tiring and getting sloppy on his takedowns.   Russ starts to pick him apart with punches and kicks.   Russ survives another expedition to the ground and the round ends.

Round 3 Russ lands a strike and goes for a takedown of his own but they end in a clinch.   Russ disengages and is able to land more strikes from the outside.   Josh manages yet another takedown and works to North South.   After some body strikes Josh finds the energy to pass to the mount and deliver more strikes before the time expires.   During the groundwork here Josh had grabbed the fence and was warned twice before the ref took a point away.

145 LB weight Amatuer Mixed Martial Arts

      Nikolay Pachov (Cook's Impact/GA)
        versus
      Rusty Crowder

Winner:  Rusty Crowder Wins by Decision
Live Fight Coverage from Next MMA Fighter:

Rusty is looking to score early but Nick tags him with a straight right that stuns Rusty.   Rusty survives and rushes to meet Nick.   Rusty goes low for a takedown and Nick gets him in a guillotine.   Rusty is able to defend from the submission and work to pass the guard.   Nick shrimps his hips out effectively and gets to standing.   Rusty attacks with a flurry and Nick is the one to get the takedown now.   Nick is unable to pass and stands.   Rusty lands a leg kick and straight right which he follows with another takedown.   Rusty is able to get to half guard and continues to work.   The time expires just as Rusty passes to side control.

2nd round Nick catches one of Rusty's body kicks but doesn't do much with it.   Rusty rushes in with another flurry and gets another takedown when Nick covers up.   Rusty works some body strikes from top position and is ultimately able to pass to mount.   He works for an arm and Nick narrowly evades an armbar.   Rusty is tenacious and maintains control of the arm which he uses to transition into a triangle that Nick is able to escape.   Nick momentarily takes Rusty's back but Rusty is able to reverse and get Nick's back.   The round ends with Rusty in control.

Nick is behind in points and he knows it.   Nick was looking for an opening early in the 3rd round but Rusty attacks with another flurry and get it to the ground.   Rusty lands in an ideal position for an D'Arce choke and works for it for first half of the round.   Rusty maintains control for the rest of the round and the time expires.

170 LB weight Amatuer Mixed Martial Arts

      John Downing (Cooks Impact/GA)
        versus
      Matt Pierce

Winner:  John Downing Wins by Submission (Armbar) in the 1st round
Live Fight Coverage from Next MMA Fighter:

Both fighters start with some push kicks and John lands a good right hand.   Matt comes back swinging with the worst of intentions and really wanting to end it early.   Matt is blocking the low kicks with his hands and it'll prove a huge liability.    John is looking for a takedown and manages to connect with one when Matt approaches with some strikes.   John circles quickly to take the back when Matt tries to roll for an escape.   John is able to isolate and arm and apply a quick armbar for a tap.

170 LB weight Advanced Amatuer Mixed Martial Arts

      Josh Downing (Cooks Impact/GA)
        versus
      Matt Sword

Winner:  Josh "R&R" Downing Wins by Submission (Armbar) in the 1st round
Live Fight Coverage from Next MMA Fighter:

Josh lands a sold left early in the fight and crushes Matt in the corner.   Matt rebounds and gets on top of Josh in side control.   Matt was able to stack Josh to try to pass the guard but Josh switched his hips quickly and sink in an armbar.   Really slick work by Josh on the ground.

      Tim Stout (MOAB Fighting System)
        versus
      Phillipe Wyman (Sucker Punch)

Winner:  Tim Stout by unanimous decision.

Live Fight Coverage from Next MMA Fighter:

"Pillip is the agressor early on with some leg and body kicks.   Tim is charging up and throwing all of his punches with bad intentions.   Tim is looking for s one-shot ko here.   Tim unleashes a strong leg kick and 12 combo.   Tim is noticeably stronger than Phillip and pushes him against he corner while manipulatin the arms and neck.   Phillip escapes and drives into Tim for a takedown and Tim immediately sweeps to top position in Phillips guard.   Tim works some GnP from Phillip’s guard, picking his punches and delivering big elbows.   After a few shots he’s able to pass to half-guard.   Tim postures up for a big shot and Phillip is able to get his guard back.   When Tim goes for an armbar, Phillip stands.   Phillip lands a left and shoots the takedown.   He knocks Tim down and eats an upkick on the way in. T  hey scramble and end the round reaching for leg locks on each other.

Beginning the 2nd round.   After a few missed shots the fighters clinch and some knees are exchanged.   Tim pushes forward and trips for a takedown.   Tim is able to pass into side control and subsequently loses it to half-guard and then full guard.   Phillip is unable to do any damage from the bottom but Tim is still able to land some shots from the guard.   The ref stands them up from inactivity and they get to standing and trading.   Tim slips form a kick and Phillip gets into Tim’s guard.   Phillip is unable to pass and stands after a time attempts a sub.   They get to standing and Tim is starting to tire.   They miss some shots and Tim shoots for a takedown that lands him in Phillip’s guard.

3rd round Tim goes back to throwing strong punches and kicks until he shoots a takedown.   Tim lands in Phillip’s guard once again and lands the occasional shot.   He works like this for a minute or two and leaves his neck exposed.   Phillip immediately sits up and attempts a guillotine.   Both fighters are extremely tired and Phillip releases the guillotine.   They are stood up eventually and Tim finds a huge right, Phillip is bloody and stunned.   Tim gets him to the ground and moves from a front headlock to side control while Phillip is turtled to drop some heavy hammer fists as the round expires.

Tim Stout defeats Phillip Wyman by unanimous decision at the end of round 3"

  • Jan 29 2010 — World Muay Thai Championships
    • The US Team at the IFMA Amateur World Muay Thai Championships in Calgary Canada included 2 Cook's Impact Academy fighters and trainer Mark Cook.
The event promoted as "H2H Detonation" held at the Silver Dollar Casino was a complete sell out with over 900 spectators.  Team USA fell short in a 5 round decision to 2 highly recognized international fighters.  It was a hard-core back and forth contest and Team USA plans to redeem themselves in future contests.

Mens Welterweight Full Muay Thai 5 Rounds of 2 Minutes

Russell Benes (Cooks Impact/Powder Springs, GA)
        versus
      Hakeem Dawodu (Mike Miles/Calgary, Canada)

      Winner:  Hakeem Dawodu by decision.
Post Fight Comments from Fight Promoter:

"Great action from these two athletes over the course of 5 rounds.    Benes would dance and throw techniques while Dawodu showed the calm and composure he learned while fighting in Bangkok at the end of 2009.

Dawodu did hurt the American during the 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds but never capitalized.    Benes delivered some excellent technique while Dawodu responded in kind.    A very good fight."

Mens Superwelterweight Full Muay Thai 5 Rounds of 2 Minutes

Josh Downing (Cooks Impact/Powder Springs, GA)
        versus
      Peter Arbeau (Mike Miles/Calgary, Canada)

      Winner:  Peter Arbeau by decision.
Post Fight Comments from Fight Promoter:

"One of the most 'entertaining' matches of the evening.   Muay Thai?    Nope!   Downing brings a fight with him, and it was very obvious by his techniques and tactics that he is a MMA athlete.

As the bout opened Arbeau took a kick to the groin and needed time to recover.   As the bout continued, Downing danced all over the ring to confuse Arbeau.   A variety of judo leg sweeps, wrestling throws (including a double leg take down and low sweeps on the ground), and even unintentional head butts were used on Arbeau.   Downing was to grab and continually sweep Arbeau to the canvas and in the process was to have a point finally deducted in the 3rd round.   Then two athletes were throwing each other to the canvas and as one would fall he would throw the other.

By the 3rd round Arbeau had settled into the fight and was catching Downing with some very heavy kicks to the body and elbows in the clinch.   Still Arbeau was to take an illegal blow and this angered him.   He ran at Downing jumping to throw a technique and Downing was to duck while the Canadian sailed over him.   Everyone was astounded including Arbeau!   Downing continued through to the opposite side of the ring purposely showing he was unscathed and the Canadian did not hit him.

In the final two rounds Downing was tiring, but he was never out of the fight.   Arbeau just started catching his foe with more and more kicks.   Arbeau was to win the bout by unanimous decision.

If you ever get a chance to see Downing in a MMA fight, and if he moves like this, do not miss the chance to see him.   Downing is quite the showman, and he works the audience into a frenzy."

      Lightweight Mixed Martial Arts

Russell Benes (Cooks Impact/Powder Springs, GA)
        versus
      Justin Strange (Independent Fighter/Knoxville, TN)

Winner:  Russell in 2nd Round with a KO

Russell Benes came out wanting to stand and after dominating the first round on his feet a and in the clinch against a guy with experience on his side, his opponent had "12" fights in his fight career prior to this fight!

Russell came out in the 2nd round and let his hands do the talking as he unloaded multiple combinations that dropped his opponent.   After an attempt of a Guilltine choke with Russell in his opponents half guard, Russell defended it perfectly by getting wrist control and escaped and unleashed the "rain" hitting his opponent several times from mount position and transitioning to his back after he "turtled up" to earn him a TKO victory due to tap-out to strikes early in the second round.

      Welterweight Mixed Martial Arts

Josh Downing (Cooks Impact/Powder Springs, GA)
        versus
Davis Bailey (Tommy Cho Karate/Atlanta, GA)

Winner:  Josh in 1st Round with a KO

Josh Downing competed in the main event and stepped up to the Welterweight division.   Josh was an absolute machine in the fight dictating the pace of the fight from the very beginning and needless to say the pace is best described as OVERDRIVE!

Being outweighed by almost 6 lbs at weigh-ins this didn't bother Josh as the only offensive attack his opponent could gain was trying to work from the clinch but that didn't work either as Josh just threw his opponent against the cage and worked solid combination to drop him multiple times.   After attacking from his opponents guard on two occassions and standing back up, Josh easily passed his opponents guard and starting dropping bombs from side control to earn a tapout due to strikes within the first minute of the first round.

      Featherweight Mixed Martial Arts

        versus
      Hector Espanoza (Messiah MMA/Columbus, GA)

Winner:  D'Angelo Bynum in 3 rounds by unanimous decision.
Post Fight Comments from Next MMA Fighter.com:

"Fight 4 (135 lb): Diangelo Bynum vs. Hector Espinoza

      Winner, Bynum by Decision (unanimous)

This one also went the full three rounds, and it was a great fight to watch — one of the two best fights of the night.

First off, I've got to mention Bynum's entrance...  perched, inside a dufflebag with just his head and hands sticking out, on the back of one of his cornermen.   After the fight, he told us that their gag was an homage to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.   If you've never seen a 135-lb dude shaking his fists like a madman while shoved in a sack and carried on the back of a 230-lb guy, well...  then you just haven't lived.   Or something.   Anyway, it was pretty funny.

But on to the fight.   With guys this size, you expect fast, frenetic action and great endurance, and neither of these fighters disappointed.   Espinoza started the scoring with some solid leg kicks, but Bynum timed the first two and shot a lightning-fast takedown early in the round.   Espinoza nearly caught him in a guillotine from his guard, but Bynum weaseled out around 1:30 into the round.   The rest of the round was similarly quick, with the two fighters competing for the advantage on the ground and on their feet.   Right on the bell, Bynum caught Espinoza with another takedown.

In round 2, Bynum showed his standup skills a little more, landing some good shots in the first 30 seconds of the round, and also managed to stuff a takedown attempt by Espinoza, ending with a classic Greco-Roman front-head-and-arm.   But that doesn't mean Espinoza was a slouch; he is a solid 135, and he throws punches like a guy who's much heavier.   Bynum's game plan of avoiding those fists and bringing the fight to the ground whenever possible carried him through, however.   The ref showed some good judgment in standing the fighters up on two occasions during this round when the ground work slowed, but each time Bynum was able to bring Espinoza back down and execute his plan, ending with a big slam from a double-leg late in the round.

The third round cinched the decision for Bynum, who shot yet another successful single-leg takedown at just 11 seconds after the opening bell, and he kept the pressure on for the rest of the round.   At just under a minute into the round, Espinoza, who looked maybe slightly the stronger of the pair, rolled Bynum around and got into his guard; however, Bynum immediately went for a triangle, which nearly sunk in.   Espinzo broke free around 1:40, but Bynum won the scramble and got into side control, and from there managed the rest of the round.

Interestingly, by my observation (using my trusty iPhone stopwatch app...), the bell for the third round rang at 2:00, not 3:00, making the fight result a little questionable, but Bynum dominated things pretty clearly throughout, so I certainly don't mean to take anything away from him.

In all, a terrific, fast-paced fight from two very talented young combatants.   Either one of these guys will certainly put on a good show if you ever get an opportunity to see him fight."

      Lightweight Mixed Martial Arts

Josh Downing (Cooks Impact/Powder Springs, GA)
        versus
      Joey Nicolson (Genesis MMA/McDonough, GA)

Winner:  Josh Downing by head kick knockout at :48 seconds of round one.
Post Fight Comments from Next MMA Fighter.com:

"Fight 2 (155 lb): Josh Downing vs. Joey Nicolson

Winner, Downing by TKO (stoppage due to strikes) @ 0:43 of Round 1

Another quick fight.   Of these two fighters, Downing looked the fitter, but both proved capable of throwing good, hard punches.   Downing's proved the stronger, though, when he pulled off a nice combo to finish the fight: He landed a high right-leg roundhouse followed by a big left hook and a straight right that staggered Nicolson and sent him sprawling back into the cage.   After checking to see whether Nicolson still knew what planet he was on, and apparently getting the reply "Mars, right?" the ref called a stop at just 43 seconds into the first round."
